The PSP Association Position Statement on Coenzyme Q10.

Anecdotal evidence and limited research findings indicate that Coenzyme Q10 may be of benefit to patients with PSP.

Patients taking doses varying between 100 and 600mg Coenzyme Q10 per day have reported improvements in their general well-being. There is insufficient data available to give a ‘recommended' dose. Some patients report significant improvements in general wellbeing when taking doses of between 60 and100mg per day (as available from health food shops and supermarkets). Published work* has shown that a dose equivalent to 600mg per day is safe as observed over the study's six week duration. We are unaware of any ill-effects having been reported by PSP patients taking CoQ10. The longer term effects of Coenzyme Q10 and whether it exerts any disease modifying or neuroprotective effects, at what doses and at what stage(s) in the disease are unknown. Further research is required to provide the answers to these and other questions concerning the use of Coenzyme Q10 in the treatment of PSP.
